We invited Dr. Yu Xiao, Associate Professor of Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning, Portland State University to deliver a speech “The Application of Ancient Science in Disaster Management” on 7th September.
Dr. Xiao, also the director of the Graduate Program of Emergency Management and Community Resilience, is a distinguished scholar in disaster research with nine years of teaching experience at Texas A&M University. Her expertise encompasses community resilience, disaster management, business impact, local economic adjustment, and post-disaster recovery.
During COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Xiao started exploring disaster management through the concept of ancient Chinese science. She applies holistic thinking of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements principles, to address environmental and risk management issues that Western science has been struggled with. She believes that integrating Eastern concepts of integration, balance, stability, and alignment with nature can fix the insufficient of Western perspectives. Ancient Chinese wisdom and science offer valuable insights and solutions for issues like natural disasters, health crises, and social unrest.
