On March 14, 2024, Dr. Hao-Yung Chan, a postdoctoral researcher at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, delivered a lecture on " Towards a Decision Support Conversational Agent for Disaster Response."
Dr. Chan, who double majored in Atmospheric Science and Civil Engineering at National Taiwan University, continued her graduate school at Civil Engineering, and later deepened her doctoral studies in the Department of Construction Engineering and Information Science at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Currently, as a postdoctoral researcher at NTUST, she is developing and optimizing conversational agents enhanced by technology to aid in disaster response decision-making.
Under Dr. Chan's development, the conversational agent, built on the communication platform Line, offers a more intuitive and interactive experience compared to traditional apps and web interfaces. This tool is not just a conduit for information delivery but serves as a crucial query platform during disasters, providing essential services such as locating evacuation centers, registering and inquiring about shelter arrangements for disaster victims, and managing supplies. Embracing the "University's Social Responsibility," she has also created a "Chatbot" for the community that can locate AEDs, shelters, and fire hydrants, as well as a "Flood Prevention Assistant" to aid volunteers in reporting rainfall and uploading inspection photos of water conservancy facilities.
To ensure the robot can precisely capture and swiftly respond to user needs, Dr. Chan relies on continuous improvements to the dialogue system, enabling the bot to rapidly search for and furnish accurate information, thereby enhancing the efficiency of disaster management. However, the development has encountered challenges such as ambiguous sentence recognition, the difficulty of quantifying data, and user acceptance. Despite these hurdles, the combination of human and machine interaction marks the future of technological advancement in disaster management.
