On November 8, Graduate School of Disaster Management visited Youmu village, Youmu Elementary School, and Dabangen Forest Hot Spring Hotel in Sanshia District, New Taipei City. Youmu village is the largest village in Sanshia District, and because it is located in a mountainous area, the houses in the community are set according to the topography, and the settlements are connected to each other by mountain roads of varying heights.
In 2015, Typhoon Soudelor devastated Youmu village, causing landslides, road sections, mudslides, flooding, and collapsed trees. Today, the community is in a good state of recovery and reconstruction, and is working with the national elementary schools and enterprises in the community to develop a comprehensive disaster prevention system.
Youmu Elementary School is a forest elementary school known for its rock climbing, aerial exploration, and stream experience programs, which attracts many out-of-town students. In the event of a disaster, Youmu Elementary serves as a refuge for Youmu village, storing a certain amount of dry food and water in the elementary school in case a refuge is opened for the residents. In addition, since most of the residents are elderly, it is planned that the shelter space and washroom will be located on the first floor for the convenience of the residents.
Located at the junction of Youmu village and Jiejiao village, the owner of Dabane Forest Spa Hotel attaches great importance to the issue of disaster prevention, and actively trains its employees to become disaster prevention officers. Currently, there are close to 70 disaster prevention officers at the venue, and it has also been supporting the disaster prevention work of neighboring villages for a long time, including providing venues to hold training for disaster prevention officers or donating related equipment and devices, so the company has spared no effort in implementing corporate disaster prevention.
Having experienced a severe typhoon, Youmu village is well aware of the importance of disaster mitigation and prevention, which has led to the creation of the current large-scale and well-structured disaster prevention organization, with the leaders and residents of Youmu village working together to maintain the safety of the community.
Thanks to the selfless sharing of experiences and insights by Chief Hu, Disaster Prevention Officer Tsai, Director Chen of Youmu Elementary School, and Manager Ling of Dabangan, the teachers and students of the Disaster Prevention Institute benefited a lot from the experience.
