On October 27, 2023, the director led first and second-year graduate students to conduct on-site surveys of the mudslide disaster area in Nanfeng Village, Ren'ai Township, Nantou County, which was affected by the impact of Typhoon Kano. Guided by local residents, we worked diligently, using shovels to excavate and remove surface soil on the grounds that had already undergone significant removal of debris by excavators. This effort aimed to restore the natural underground springs and wetland appearance. The community member assured us that with some manual effort, the ecological park would soon attract butterflies, dragonflies, and fireflies, promoting biodiversity. They expressed gratitude for the substantial influx of soil and rocks from the mountains, reminding us to treat the land better.

In the afternoon, we visited the "Green Life Farm," founded by the former chairman of the Indigenous Peoples Commission. The chairman and his spouse utilize local microorganisms in fermentation, applying them to agriculture and animal husbandry, replacing harmful chemicals. Despite the farm being affected by the mudslide, the soil washed down from the mountains enriched the planting soil after proper management. Since we realized the vast farm and limited manpower, we immediately assisted in post-disaster cleanup.

Finally, we visited the household affected by the disaster. Thanks to the referral from a senior who graduated from the class 2021, we were able to gain insights from local residents' conversations and detailed descriptions. We felt like experiencing the heavy rain, strong winds, and various scenarios of residents seeking refuge in the activity center on the day of the mudslide. This journey not only allowed us to deeply appreciate the beauty of nature but realize the power of disasters and the resilience of this tribal community.
