On November 3, 2023, the director and Associate Professor Wu Rong-Ping led the entire graduate student on the field studies in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County. Local tribal resident initiated the journey by conducting a reconciliation ceremony in front of the Tayal warrior sculpture and introducing the creative significance of the sculpture.

At the Jinping Bridge, we admired the Tayal story on the wall sculpture, gaining insights into traditional wisdom, culture, and taboos of GAGA, including post-harvest ceremonies honoring enemies as a way to respect their lives and resolve conflicts, preventing the tribe from falling into a vicious cycle of hatred. The legend of shooting the sun symbolizes the indomitable spirit of Tayal warriors, and the sounds of divination birds are used to predict the success of hunting, along with facial tattoos representing traditional and ethnic identity.

Moving on to the highest point along the Meiyuan Connecting Road, we gazed at North Delaman Mountain, Meiyuan Mountain, and Lidong Mountain, understanding how the Tayal people view the forest as a large refrigerator without excessive development, complaint with contemporary disaster prevention and resilience concepts. However, from the Japanese colonial period to the Nationalist and contemporary government, deforestation, land and slope development gradually degraded the mountainous land, increasing the risk of slope disasters.

During lunch, Mr. Xiahe guided us in sawing bamboo to make tableware which could also be return to recycling cycle. Following lunch, we walked through San Yi Ecological Farm, where we learned about the application of microbial fermentation, forming an environmentally friendly natural agriculture.

Before the end, the director led students in sharing insights and observations from the walk. We expressed gratitude to Mr. Xiahe for his insightful explanations, providing us with practical experiences and prompting rethinking on past biased perceptions of mountainous land use and disasters—an embodiment of the idea that practical experience surpasses theoretical knowledge.
