Disaster management Department collaborated with National Taipei University of Technology to create a distinctive slope disaster education site.

In response to the invitation from the Department of Architecture's USR team at National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT), under the guidance of tribal youth and elders, we collaborated to implement an educational site in the devastated Nantou county Nanfeng Village, severely impacted by Typhoon Kano. The project aimed to showcase education on debris flow and slope land disasters, as well as the cultural heritage of the Seediq tribe.
Following discussions between the NTUT <Indigenous Tribal Settlement Construction and Green Leisure Promotion Project> team and the tribal community, they decided to use local natural materials. The team demonstrated traditional slope protection methods by handcrafting bamboo gabion and constructing a Seediq hunter's path through the mountains.
On November 22nd and 29th, director Lin and graduate students of our department, joined the elders in Nanfeng Village. They ventured into the mountains, harvesting bamboo of various sizes and thicknesses. After removing small branches and cutting them to suitable lengths, the bamboo was transported back to the construction site. Another group of NTUT students was responsible for collecting stones, sorting them based on size and shape. Once enough bamboo was collected, the skilled elders creating bamboo gabions that were placed horizontally on the slopes—a prime example of natural slope protection techniques.
Next, thicker bamboo was sharpened into stakes, hammered into the narrow traditional hunter's path by hand, with thinner bamboo twigs used to stabilize the slope. The construction method aimed to minimize environmental impact, not only reducing the impact of soil and rock collapse but also providing an optimal venue for cultural education. The collaboration between the NTUT Department of Architecture and the Disaster Management Department of the Central Police University showcased their respective strengths, responding to the Ministry of Education's USR project to deepen the concept of sustainable development. Under the guidance of tribal leaders, the collaboration aimed to achieve goals such as reducing disaster risks, respecting local wisdom, and promoting sustainable development education.
