On April 28, 2024, Jie-Yu Li, a second-year master's student from our department, participated in the 2024 Geography Annual Meeting organized by the Chinese Geographical Society under the theme "No Island is an Island: New Perspectives on Island Studies." He presented his research in the session "Water Environment Assessment and Wind Disaster," titled "Applying the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach to Analyze the Resilience of Hu Jing Island in Penghu County to Recovery after Typhoon Doksuri." The study analyzed the social-ecological system of Hu Jing Island and explored the dynamic relationship between the environment and society using the framework of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach to understand how post-disaster conditions can facilitate better island reconstruction.
The Chinese Geographical Society was established in Nanjing in 1933 and reinstated in Taiwan in 1951. It is a national member of the International Geographical Union (IGU). The 2024 Geography Annual Meeting lasted for two days and featured six parallel sessions with approximately 150 research presented, covering a wide range of topics in geography, sociology, anthropology, history, literature, and art. Additionally, there were book launches, forums, and exhibition discussions, making the event rich and diverse in content.
Jie-Yu Li’s participation in presenting his paper on island disaster resilience not only broadened academic horizons but also enhanced the visibility of our department in academic field.
