The first part of the talk introduces Low Impact Development (LID) facilities, which are often inefficient in water recycling in highly developed cities. Through facilities such as green roofs, detention ponds, and permeable pavement, LID facilities can create runoff through decentralized and small-scale installation techniques to promote hydrological recycling in the developed areas. However, more LIDs are not always better, and modeling results show that about 30% to 40% of LIDs work best.
In the second part, Dr. Zhang shared the highlights of his doctoral thesis, in which indicators of exposure, vulnerability, and hazard were carefully calculated to quantify “disaster resilience,” and the possibility of reducing disaster resilience by adjusting the values of the indicators.
Finally, Dr. Chang mentioned the “national land capacity”, which means the maximum extent to which the environment can withstand development, and provided a comparison of the current capacity and population distribution in different regions of Taiwan, so that we can consider whether the current economic and demographic development of the northern, central, southern, and eastern regions is balanced appropriately.
